Eye, mushrooms and crystals on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an open eye framed by dotted sunburst rays at the top, with a shaggy ink cap mushroom, a cluster of crystals and a puffball below it. Thin dotted lines form a large diamond that links the motifs, and the fine shading uses stippled dots and engraved-style hatching. The design is rendered entirely in black and grey ink and runs down the outer forearm, with the edges of the design cropped by the frame.

Mrs Agnes Pryce had been sent the drawings the week before the flood, and she had not yet decided whether to trust them. The ink cap was drawn right, its shaggy scales lifting like the fringe on a bad wig, but the rest of the plate was wrong. Someone had set a crystal cluster beside it, and a puffball the size of a fist, and over all of it an eye stared out from a burst of dotted light.

She carried the plate down to the cellar where the specimen cabinets stood under bare bulbs. Her nephew Owen had hauled the crates down from the coach house that morning, swearing at the damp. Nobody in the parish had ever seen the ink cap fruit so late in the year, yet there it was at the edge of the wet ground behind the chapel, pale and slender, its gills dissolving into black ink as if it were ashamed of itself. She had gathered three and tied them in brown paper.
The crystals had come from the quarry above Cwm Du, where the men had broken open a seam of quartz and left the points glittering on the spoil heap. The puffball she found by accident, kicking through leaf litter, and it breathed a brown cloud into the air that made her cough for an hour.
On the last page of her ledger she wrote the date, then the names of the specimens, then a line she did not show anyone: the eye sees only what the diamond lets it. She closed the book, turned out the lights, and listened to the drip from the ceiling count the seconds until morning.
