A crescent moon sits above an oval panel of mountains, pine trees and a winding river, with stars and dotted shading in the sky. A sprig of foliage runs up the left side and a faceted crystal cluster sits below, linked by fine dotted lines. The work uses fine linework combined with stippled dotwork shading in black ink only, arranged in a vertical composition across the upper arm.

The moon was full again last night and I sat on the step counting the pines you said we would never manage to count. Mother has stopped asking when you will come down. Father has not stopped asking, but he asks the kettle now rather than me, so I take that as progress.
The river is lower than I have ever seen it in August. Mr Harcourt from the mill came up the valley road on Tuesday with his measuring chain and his grey dog, and he stood on the bridge for an hour writing in a black book. When I asked what he was measuring he said the water, then the stones, then said he did not know what he was measuring at all, only that the valley had changed shape since his grandfather's day. I did not tell him you had gone up past the last fence to find the crystal seam you swore was under the scree.
I found the sprig of rosemary you pressed in the atlas, the one with the dotted route inked across the passes. I have put it on the windowsill so the light comes through it. If you are reading this in some hut above the tree line with frost on the inside of the glass, come down before the snow shuts the pass. The crystals will keep. Nothing up there has ever been in a hurry.
