Mandala tattoo on a lower leg

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large circular mandala fills the leg, with a dense central rosette of stippled dots surrounded by a ring of beads and lotus-like petals. Stippled shading builds the grey tones, and fine outlines define the scrolls, a small eye within a pointed motif and a sparkle shape at the edge. The design is in black ink on pale skin, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nurse Ada Penrose came on at ten, when the corridor lights dimmed to amber and the drip stands stood along the walls like thin grey men waiting for a bus. Every night she walked the length of Ward Six with a tin of stencil ink and a box of pins, because old Mr Fenwick the porter had told her that a ward nobody watches will start to dream, and a dreaming ward is a hard place to keep patients in.

Under the building, the story went, there was a wheel painted on the cellar floor, a great round rosette of dots with a ring of beads around it and petals opening out like a lotus at dawn. A man had made it long ago, counting every breath the sick had taken in the hospital's first hundred years. Each dot was a night somebody had lived through. When the last dot was filled, the wheel would turn, and the ward would be empty, and everyone would walk out into the morning. Ada went down on her breaks and counted them with a torch in her teeth.

One night a boy in bed four asked her why the wheel had an eye in one petal. She told him the eye was there to watch the doors, so nobody left the ward without saying goodbye to the nurse on duty. He asked whether she had ever finished a dot. She said no, because the wheel was not hers to finish, only hers to keep clean.

At six o'clock, when the windows went grey, she swept the cellar and found the chalk ring unbroken and one fresh dot where none had been the night before. Upstairs the boy's mother was coming down the corridor with a paper cup of tea. Ada put the broom away and went to meet her.
