Faceted world map across the upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person seen from behind shows a large world map tattoo across the upper back and shoulder blades. The continents are drawn as angular, faceted outlines, with stippled dotwork shading filling many of the shapes. The ink is black on pale skin against a blurred graffiti wall, and the map fills most of the frame.

The map came ashore in a flour sack with a dead gull and a bottle of tar. Keeper Tom Gorran unfolded it on the lamp-room table and saw that every continent had been cut into facets, folded like paper boats, the shading pricked in with a needle so the land looked frosted. "Which one's Penzance?" asked his daughter Mair, who was nine and had no patience with maps that failed to make sense.

Nothing on it was where he expected. Africa leaned against South America like two boats on a slip, and the sea round the edges was blank. The lens threw its beam across the paper every twelve seconds, whitening the land and then letting it go dark again. He counted the seconds as his father had, and measured the distance from the rock to the first dotted coast with a pair of brass dividers.
Each night the lamp turned, and each night he pricked one more dot on the map where the light had reached. By the spring equinox the dots had filled the bays of the Americas and wandered out past the horn of Africa. Mair asked whether the map would be finished before the lamp was.
He did not answer. He took the needle and pressed a single point onto the smallest facet, a fleck of rock off the Scilly edge, and said it was the rock where they were standing. Mair found it, laughed, and went up to bed. The light went round, and the map kept its one black dot where the sea was steadiest.
