Star and triangle band on forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin horizontal band of small solid black stars and triangles across the inner forearm, just below the elbow. The shapes are simple, filled and evenly spaced, with a few varying in size and angle. The subject wears a black top, and the plain white tiled wall behind gives the image a neutral, high-contrast background.

By the third week of October the rain had found every gap in Carrow Keep, and I was still on the scaffold above the gatehouse with a claw chisel, trying to get one small star right.

The steward wanted the old frieze restored before the Michaelmas visitors came. Nobody living had seen it whole. Gwilym, who had the only paper rubbing, said it had been cut around 1620 by a mason who wrote the weather into stone: a star for a clear day, a triangle for rain, pointing up for dry and down for wet. The rubbing was grey and smudged, and half the signs had crumbled into the mortar. I stood on the planks copying what remained, reading the wall like a letter from someone who had already gone.
Halfway through the third afternoon I understood the sequence was not random. Each run of shapes matched a stretch of days, and the last group, three triangles and a star, had no counterpart in the rubbing, only a note beside it in faded ink: finish when the wind turns. I had been carving with the wind coming hard off the moor from the west, steady as a hand on my shoulder. That evening it dropped. I cut the final triangle pointing down, the way the note said, and the rain I had been listening to for a month stopped on the slates as though someone had shut a door.
