Geometric arrow tattoo on the ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a geometric design made from a diamond-like frame with fine radiating lines and several arrows pointing outward, running down the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in one black tone against bare skin. The person is photographed from the side with one arm raised and long curly hair draped across the frame, with the tattoo as the main focus.

The compass had been Mr Aske's idea, not mine. He kept it in a brass tin on the lamp room sill, and every evening before the light came on he would open the lid and tap the needle until it settled on north, as if north might otherwise wander off in the night. I was twelve when I first stood beside him and watched the arrows of the lattice shiver in the lamp glass, the thin lines of the frame spreading across the whitewashed wall like a net someone had cast to catch the sea.

The winter the fog came in and stayed, the Fenwick boat failed to make the harbour mouth. Its lantern went out somewhere past the Hundred Rocks, and Mr Aske sat with his hand flat on the glass, counting the seconds between my sweeps of the horn. He drew the diamond on the chart that night, a box within a box, with eight fine lines radiating from its heart. Each line was a bearing. Each bearing pointed at somebody's door in the village. He said the lighthouse had never been a light at all, only a place to point a finger from.
The boat came in on the third morning, rowed by a boy I didn't know, with no one else aboard. He asked for Mr Aske by name and I told him the keeper was dead. He nodded as though he had expected it and took the tin from my hand, opened it, and tapped the needle until it fixed on the grey shape of the headland. Then he turned and walked back down the steps, and the lines on the wall went on pointing at nothing I could see.
