Fairy pin-up and red roses on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A winged female figure in a black corset, black stockings and a tutu-like skirt stands among large red roses, with a second rose at the top left. The outlines are bold and black, with solid black fills on the wings, corset and stockings and some grey shading on the petals and leaves. Red dominates the colour, and the design fills the length of the forearm against a dark patterned shirt on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Win, the roses along the back wall have gone quite mad this summer. The red ones by the coal shed are as big as saucers and the Crimson Glory is climbing into the apple tree. Mr Pargeter says it's the wet spring and the new compost, but I know better, and you will too once you have seen her.

She first turned up in June, perched on the sundial as if she had been sent to wait for the post. Black corset laced tight, black stockings, a skirt of net that caught the light like frost, and wings the colour of a pressed moth. She would not give her name. She only asked me, very politely, to leave the dead heads on until Tuesday, because the roses liked to be asked. I laughed at her. The next morning a bloom I had cut back to the stalk was open again, redder than before.

Pargeter caught her once, down on her knees among the leaves, pinching new buds awake between finger and thumb. He swore she looked at him the way a hard frost looks at a bucket. Now he leaves a saucer of milk beside the arbour and tells everyone it is for the cat, though we have no cat.

Last night I asked her what the roses wanted in return. She didn't answer. She just tapped the bloom at the top of the wall, the one nearest my kitchen window, and said somebody ought to remember which one was first. Come at Christmas and see for yourself. Don't bring the girls, they'll want to climb her. Your loving sister, Edie.
