Skull, crown and roses on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A skull wearing a crown sits at the centre of the design, with two red roses and swirling filigree around it. The skull and crown are rendered in black and grey with sketchy linework and soft shading, while the roses are filled in red. Fine black splatter and drips run down below the flowers, and the tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder against a dark top and striped top.

The crown had sat on the kitchen windowsill since Ned's funeral, and nobody in Coldharbour would lift it, so when the skull came up the orchard path on the last Saturday in August, Mrs Thorne assumed the carter had left it for her. The skull was wearing the crown. The bone was grey and clean, and it walked the way a man walks when his knees are bad, one step and then a pause.

"Your codlins are ripe," it said, though its jaw did not move. "I have a basket and no hands." She had a basket and two hands, and she had been meaning to pick the trees for a fortnight. She fetched the wicker from the shed and went down the rows beside it. Where it stopped, the grass went silver with dew, and the red roses along the hedge opened all at once, as if someone had struck a match under them.

By dusk the basket was full and the skull had not eaten a single apple. "The price is one thing you did not give me," it said. Mrs Thorne thought of Ned's hat on its peg, the cold tea he never finished, the bread she had not yet thrown out. She said nothing, and the skull seemed content with that. It set the crown down on the oldest tree's grafting scar, lifted the basket onto its shoulder, and went back down the lane the way it had come.

In the morning the crown was gone. In its place a single rose had opened on the old tree, dark red and heavy, and its petals dripped onto the grass in slow beads that did not dry. Mrs Thorne picked the fruit from the lower branches herself, bruised a few against her apron, and left the rose where it was.
