Fairy sitting on a crescent moon on the back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A fairy with blue, eye-patterned wings sits on the curve of a large crescent moon, which has a detailed human face in profile on its outer edge. The moon and figure are rendered in soft grey shading and black outlines, with blue used for the wings and the fairy's dress. The design fills the upper back and is centred on the crescent against plain skin.

Put that knife down before you take your thumb off, and listen, because the moon's climbing over the cloud and I'll not tell it twice. Aye, that's the one. Look at him grinning at us like he's pleased with himself. My gran swore that face belonged to the moon's own father, sat up there with his chin on his hands, and that the little fairy perched on his horn was the only thing stopping him tipping off the sky.

Her wings were blue and full of eyes, so she could watch every lamp on every ship on the black water. She sat on that curve all night, humming the wind up whenever a boat lay becalmed with her sails hanging like wet washing. The moon grumbled that she was a weight on his horn and he'd never get his beauty sleep. She told him to hush and mind his face.
Then came the Dunmore Lass, nine weeks out of Bristol with no wind at all, and a cabin boy called Tam who'd climbed the mast after a lost hat and dozed off up there. The fairy saw him swaying in the rigging. She dropped off the moon like a stone, wings wide, caught the boy by his collar and set him down on the deck. The breeze came up behind her and the ship limped home on it. The moon never forgave her for leaving his horn, and she never forgave herself for the dress she let go in the sea.
Every time the water goes that bright blue off the Scilly rocks, that's her dress you're looking at. Now pass me those potatoes, and mind the eyes on them, they're the same as hers.
