The charm came in on the 22:14 from Haverleigh, pinned inside the lining of a wool coat that nobody had claimed since March. Ivy Dunmore turned it over under the lamp of the lost property cupboard. It was pewter, no longer than her thumbnail: a crescent moon with a woman seated on the horn of it, wings swept back like a cloak in a gale. Someone had carried it for years; the loop was worn thin.

She should have logged it under miscellaneous and gone home. Instead she held it up to the window, where the platform lights turned the glass into a dim mirror, and the real moon hung low over the goods yard, thin as a fingernail paring. Beside it sat a single star. She had worked nights for eleven years and had never once looked up from the desk.

The coat belonged to Walter Pryce, a retired signalman who lived in a bungalow past the level crossing. Ivy rang the number on his file. A woman answered, sounding as though she had been expecting a different kind of call. Ivy explained about the coat. There was a long pause, then the clink of a kettle being set down. "That was mine," the woman said. "I wore it on my lapel when we courted on the late shift. He kept it in his coat so it wouldn't get lost."

Ivy wrapped the charm in tissue and, at six, walked the long way round by the footbridge. The sky was going pale over the yard, and the moon had slipped behind the water tower. She would post it first class in the morning, with a note she had not yet decided how to write.
