Tower and flowing hair on the ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A tall tower rises from a grassy hill, with long golden hair falling down its length. The background is a blue night sky with soft cloud shapes behind the tower. Shading is smooth and painterly, with colour blending between blue, green and gold.

The hair came down the tower at dusk, just as the keeper had promised, a long gold fall that caught the last of the light and slid over the grey stone like poured honey. You stood at the foot of the hill with snow to your shins and the mule's rope looped round your wrist, and you did not yet dare to take hold.

Old Maren, who ran the salt post at Cold Ford, had given you the rules on the walk up. The hair would hold a grown man if he kept his weight close to the wall. It would not hold a liar. You had nothing to lie about, only a letter from her son in the lowland garrison, folded small and damp inside your coat, and a promise you had made on the road that you would not read it.
Halfway up, the wind pulled the hair sideways and you swung against the stone, a clumsy knot of elbows and fear, while the pass below turned from blue to black. Somewhere a bell rang twice for a caravan that had not yet come. You heard the keeper singing a line about a boy who never came home, so you climbed faster and did not look down.
At the sill she took the letter without glancing at it, her fingers already cold. "Forty years of salt and not one of them dry," she said, and drew the hair in hand over hand, coiling it across the flagstones like a sleeping animal. Far below, a single lantern rose out of the cloud on the road. She counted it aloud until it reached the ford.
