Faith script with a cross bar sketch

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn design shows the word faith written vertically in cursive script, with a single horizontal bar crossing the letters to form a cross. The linework is dark, even and uniform, with no shading. The design is drawn in black ink on cream lined paper, photographed under warm, dim light with a book visible at the left edge.

Dear Tom, the crossbeam on the boathouse door has worked loose again, so I have knocked it back into place myself with the good hammer, the one you said I would never lift. Mrs Pryce brought round a brace of mackerel this morning and asked after you as if you were only down at the harbour and not five weeks gone on the Ardent.

I ran out of ink in March, so I have been writing with the carpenter's pencil from your tin. I practise the word on the backs of the tide tables. You always wrote it running downwards, the letters leaning into the wind like they had somewhere to be, and I cannot make mine do the same. Every time I get the loop of the f right, the t tips over and falls into the i. Mrs Pryce says that is my hand being honest about my nerves.

Yesterday the Ardent's buoy came in on the shingle at Gull Head with a number painted on it. It is not your number, but a boy from the mainland swore he had seen a man in a blue jersey on the pier at Penhallow who looked like you, buying tobacco and not paying for it. I have decided he was lying. That is faith, or stubbornness, which Mrs Pryce insists are the same thing on an island.

The light is lit and the clock is wound twice over, because you will want it running when you come up the path in the dark. Kiss the girls for me if you find them first. Your wife, Morwenna.
