Spiral and infinity design pencil sketch

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing on white paper shows a linked design made of two curled spirals and a looping infinity shape, with a small stylised ".2" placed to the lower right. The lines are thin and even, with light grey shading along one side of each stroke to suggest depth. The composition is centred on a plain background, with a dark wooden surface and a second sheet of paper visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, and mind the lantern, for the wax drips when the wind turns. You want to hear about Mistress Ada Penhallow and her garden behind the chapel wall, because the vines there still curl the way she taught them. Every spring she trained the bindweed into spirals, one loop for each frost she had outlived, and she swore the plants never once tangled with each other. Then came the year the Ashby boys dug a trench for the water pipe straight through the middle of her beds. Roots snapped like piano wire. Ada knelt in the mud for a whole afternoon, gathering the cut ends in her apron pocket, and nobody dared ask her what she meant to do with them.

She took them to the old tithe barn, where the swallows nest, and she tied the broken stems together in a long figure that looped back on itself, a lazy eight lying on its side, with a curl at either end where a stem had refused to lie flat. Then she sat with it on her knee until the light went out of the rafters. In the morning the stems had rooted in a bucket of rainwater, pale threads reaching down as if they were searching for the ground they had lost.

They say she planted the whole tangle at the wall's gap, and that the vines have grown over the trench ever since, with a little two-curled knot near the gate that no gardener can prune without it growing back twice as thick. Some folk say the number she scratched beside it was the count of the roots she saved. Others say it was the year she stopped counting. Mind the wax now. Off to bed with you, and leave the gate on the latch for her.
