Farm animal scene across a full back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A large back piece shows a farmyard scene dominated by a black and white cow with a bell, a multicoloured rooster, and a pink pig, with a red barn, wooden fence and a numbered tag on a post behind them. Smooth shading and bold outlines give the animals volume, and red blood drips from the cow's mouth. The palette is mostly vivid colour, with green and yellow fields and a warm orange sun, and the design fills the whole back from shoulder to shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Forty-three had come off the lorry from the Hereford sale with a tag in her ear and a bell on a leather strap she did not want, and by the first frost she was the only beast who would walk ahead of Wilf's boots to the top gate. Nobody had asked the cow where she wanted to go. The pig, Mabel, had never asked anybody anything, and the speckled hen stood on the mounting block every morning as though someone paid her to.

The trouble started with the wire. Someone had left the north fence slack after lambing, and on the third night Duchess, as Wilf's wife insisted on calling her, pushed through to the lane and came back with her jaw torn open. She stood by the barn door in the grey light with red threading from her chin onto the cobbles, and the rooster went up on the water butt and crowed as if the whole business had been his idea.

Jess, the granddaughter, found her crouched by the feed bins with the sun coming up orange over the hedge and the yard steaming. 'She's been telling us,' the girl said. 'The gate was open all along.' Wilf didn't argue. He walked the fence with pliers and a bucket of staples and found the wire wound three times round a post and cut clean through, as if somebody had wanted the cow to find the way.

That evening he hung the bell back round Duchess's neck and let her lead them all out: the pig, the rooster, the hen with her chicks strung out behind, down to the gap where the hedge had always been thin. Nobody counted them. By morning the field was empty except for the sun, and the bell was still ringing somewhere down the lane.
