Ewan brought flapjack on Tuesdays in a tin with a painted sheep on the lid, and he wore his woolly jumper all through the autumn term, even when the radiators were cold. That was the trouble. The lambs started turning up torn in the paddock behind the allotments, and Ewan was always first at the gate with a bucket and a face full of grief. Nobody suspects a lad who grieves so well.

Old Sadie Whitlow kept the ram that had won at Ashford show, and her kitchen window looked straight down that paddock. For a month she sat up with the lamp lit and watched. She saw the grey coat under the wool, the red eyes that caught the light, and the teeth. She didn't ring the constable. Ewan's a solicitor now, I'm told, and he'll be the one at the bar buying rounds tonight. Go easy on him. Just keep your tins shut.
