A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had come down the valley before the first snow, and Old Maren's sister would not leave the loom until the thread ran out. They kept the lamp lit in the back room where the wool was stacked, and the sheep shifted and sighed behind the wall. Maren's grandson, Tobiah, was nine and wanted to know why the lace on the shawl had to be made from beads and not from plain cord.

His grandmother said a shawl was only a warm thing until someone gave it a border. The border was a crown of curling leaves, and from it hung strings of black seed-beads, and from each string a feather. She had learned the pattern from her mother, who had learned it from a traveller who sold brass needles at the market gate and never gave his name. Each feather had to be shaded by hand, a little darker at the root, so that in lamplight it looked as if the wind had just let go of it.

In the thaw, when the sheep were moved to the high field, Tobiah found a feather caught in the hedge below the barn. It was grey and fine, and when he held it to the light he could see the barbs drawn in like pencil strokes. He took it to his grandmother, who turned it over twice, then tied it with red thread to the end of the shawl's longest strand.

She said the shawl would keep whoever wore it warm through the next hard winter, provided they remembered the feather was never theirs to keep. Tobiah carried it up the hill that spring and left it on the wall where the wind could take it.
