Mirrored feather and ornament thigh tattoo
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two thighs are shown side by side, each with a mirrored tattoo of an ornate mandala-like motif with scrollwork and filigree at the top. Strings of beads hang down from the motif, ending in shaded feathers of varying lengths. The work is in black ink and grey tones, with fine linework in the ornament and softer shading on the feathers, centred on the image against a dark background.

Sit down, the kettle's only just gone off and the last tram won't come before midnight, so you've time for this one. It's about two girls in Leeds, back when the mills ran through the night and you could hear the looms from Kirkgate.

Their mother's jet beads broke the summer she died, so Ida and Maggie restrung them on black thread with pale feathers a coal man brought down from the moor, one grey feather for every week of their father's illness. Ida hung hers in the front room. Maggie hung hers in the back bedroom of the flat across the yard. They agreed without ever saying it that the two strings should face each other through the window, so they'd always hang the same length and sway in the same draught.
Ida married a tram driver and moved out to Armley. Maggie stayed put and sold remnants off a barrow. For thirty winters, Ida swore, she looked across the street before she drew her curtains and saw her sister's feathers moving in step with her own.
Then one February the landlord cleared the flat across the yard and the string came down. Ida went over with a torch and found the bedroom bare, one black bead rolling under the bed and nothing else. She keeps that bead in a matchbox on her sill now. When the trams go by at night, she opens her curtains and watches her own feathers swing, and she waits for the other pair to answer.
