Feather and script quote on hip
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A grey shaded feather lies at an angle above a line of black cursive script that reads 'With brave wings she flies'. The feather has soft tonal shading with fine detail along its barbs, while the lettering is in clean, flowing black linework. The photo is a warm, sunlit close crop of bare skin above a floral bikini, with blue water in the background.

No, sit down, the chairs in this hall have outlived the lot of us and they'll hold. You'll want the end, I know, you always did. Right. Where was I? Ah, the summer the skylight in the gym was propped open with a dictionary, and Marjorie Pell climbed out onto the roof with a feather in her teeth and a look on her face like she'd already been told no.

Nobody agreed on where the feather came from. Ruth Quinn swore it was a gull's. Mr Ashdown, who taught us geography and had a face like a wet Sunday, said it was a wood pigeon's and took it off her in the corridor. She didn't cry. She watched him fold it into his top pocket and said, very polite, that he'd be sorry when she was gone. We thought nothing of it. Girls said things like that, and most of them stayed put.
She left at the end of Year Eleven without a goodbye to anyone but the caretaker. Years later my sister had a postcard from Lisbon with no name on it, just a grey feather taped to the back and those words in biro beneath the stamp: With brave wings she flies. Ashdown had died by then, and his widow had sent the postcard on to us with a note saying he'd kept a box of things he never explained. I've still got it. Here, pass it along the row, mind the corners, it's older than your mortgages.
Go on, pass it. It's light as nothing, and somehow it still pulls your hand down a little when it reaches you.
