Small elephant outline on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small single-line outline of an elephant in profile, with its trunk curled and a simple leg visible, sits on the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even with no shading, in dark black ink. The photo is a close, angled selfie in warm sunlight, with a red bikini top and a striped surface at the edge of the frame, and a cartoon emoji sticker sits below the tattoo.

The snow had sealed the Drover's Rest for three days when the pedlar's cart slid into the yard, its axle wrapped in sacking. Maud Harrow counted the lamps as she lit them, eleven in the common room for the guests she had left, and a twelfth she kept for the man who had paid for his supper with a tin figure instead of coins.

He had been thin, with frost in his eyebrows, and he had pressed the figure into her palm: a small grey beast, one ear flattened, its trunk curled up as if it were smelling the weather. "Keep it near the fire," he had said, "and it will find its way back to whoever needs the road." She had laughed then. Now the carter's boy in the corner, who had come in coughing, kept asking whether the elephant could smell the sea.

On the third night the wind dropped and the stars came out hard over the moor. Maud carried the figure to the window and saw that the snow had drifted beside the stable into a long curved bank, exactly the shape of a trunk lifting. Beyond it ran a line of tracks, pressed deep by someone walking away from the inn, not towards it.

In the morning the pedlar's cart was gone and the road was open. She set the figure on the sill facing east, and the boy, feverish and grinning, traced its outline on the frosted glass with one finger. "It's going home," he said. Maud did not correct him. She poured the tea and let the kettle sing.
