Feather and script tattoo on the side of the torso
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black feather sits on the side of the torso, angled diagonally with fine barbs and soft grey gradients. Below it, black cursive script reads I'm only yours, followed by a name in a simpler italic hand. The photograph is monochrome and shows a navel piercing and the edge of white underwear at the lower right.

Mrs Dorothea Sallow had been paying a penny a line for the letters she could not write herself, and the scrivener at the back of the Scarborough post office had grown fond of her hands, which shook only when she spoke of the sea. Each Thursday she sat on the stool by the coal scuttle and dictated while he dipped a goose quill in ink gone thick with winter.

"Put that I miss the kettle," she said on the third Thursday. "He'll laugh at that. He always said the kettle was my only true love."
He wrote it down. Then he wrote the line she had been saving since autumn, the one she had asked for at the very end: I'm only yours. He did not ask whose name went beneath it. She told him anyway, Ezra, and made him spell it back to her twice.
When the letter was sealed, he pulled a grey feather from the wing of the gull on the sill, soft at the barbs, and tucked it inside the envelope. "For the weight," he said, though it weighed nothing, and she did not ask why. Ten weeks later a clerk brought back a bundle marked return to sender, the letter unopened, the feather still folded in it like a bookmark, and the scrivener understood he had been writing to a ship that went down in March.
