Small mountain range tattoo on skin
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a mountain range with several peaks and a few tree shapes at the base sits on pale skin in a triangular gap between dark clothing. The linework is fine and delicate, with light shading on the peaks. The photograph is black and white, and the tattoo is centred in the frame against the dark fabric and lace edge.

So the geography master said there were six peaks, and he'd drawn them on the board in chalk, six neat points, and Eddie Hollis stood up at the back and said there were seven if you counted the one that hid behind the others when the cloud came down. Nobody believed him. Forty years on, I'm standing in the back room of the Co-op Hall with a paper cup of warm squash, Eddie's been gone nine years, and that seventh peak is still up there behind Crow Stone, where the pines lean downhill like they're listening.

And I'll tell you how we knew. We walked up Shepherd's Edge on a Saturday, the whole class, sandwiches in brown paper, and the cloud came off the tops so fast it took the sky with it. Eddie went ahead to find the path. We heard him whistle twice, then nothing, then his voice from somewhere to the left, saying come and look, the mountains are all here, and there's one more than there ought to be. We found him perched on a drystone wall with his pencil case open, drawing the line of peaks in the thin light, hatching the shadowed flanks, and beneath them a row of stubby trees no bigger than thumbnails.
He tore the page out and pressed it into my hand. I still have it. You can't make out the seventh peak unless you hold the paper up to the window and let the light come through from behind.
So when you drive home tonight and the road bends past the reservoir, look up. If the cloud sits low, you'll count six. Keep looking. Eddie always said the seventh only shows itself to people who've been told it's there.
