Thy will be done script on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photo of a small, single-line script phrase reading Thy will be done, set diagonally across smooth skin. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering has a slightly looping handwritten character. The image is black and white, with a dim studio background and a soft grey tone across the skin.

Dear Marian,

The boat came in on Thursday without Tom, and the whole of Skerrin stood on the slip pretending not to look at each other. Mrs Gall took my arm and said the words everyone says, that the sea keeps what it likes. I wanted to tell her the sea keeps nothing it hasn't first taken. I kept my mouth shut and let her hold on.
Your letter reached me with the post on Saturday, the ferry being forty minutes late for the weather. You asked whether I am sleeping. I am, in the way a person sleeps in a house with one door left open. The kettle still goes on at six because my hands do it before I can stop them.
Father Ruane came up the hill with his book and his bad knee and read the names out at the kirk. When he reached Tom he stopped and looked at me over his spectacles, waiting for me to break. I didn't. I had the shopkeeper's pencil in my coat pocket, and I wrote a line from the prayer on the inside of my wrist, small, the way Tom used to scribble notes on the fish crates, all loops and no hurry. Thy will be done. It isn't a comfort. It is only a thing a person can carry up a hill.
Let the ferry bring you in May. I'll meet it at the slip, and I won't look at the water first.
Love, Ellen
