Feather, birds and script quote on a foot
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black cursive script reads "Your wings were ready but my heart was not" across the top of the foot, with a group of small black bird silhouettes flying in the upper left. A large feather below the lettering is shaded in blue, purple and grey to give it dimension. The composition runs diagonally across the foot on a light blue background.

Her son Teodor had gone with them, or so the harbour gossip said. He was nineteen and had signed on to a salt barge bound for Corvane, and he had left a letter folded inside a biscuit tin. Marrow read it every evening by the lamp she was supposed to be trimming. It said only that the sea called to him the way the sky called to the birds, and that she should not wait up. She had written back that his wings were ready, and she had meant it, but her own heart had not yet learned the same thing.
On the third night of the storm she climbed the stairs with the feather in her apron pocket and laid it on the sill beside the glass. The beam swept out across the black water. Far off, a single dark shape turned against the moon, wings pulled tight, learning the wind again.
