Feather tattoo on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather runs diagonally across the back of a hand, from near the base of the thumb towards the wrist. The feather is drawn with fine strokes and soft grey shading that gives the barbs and central quill some depth. The image is a close phone photograph in indoor light, with only black ink and grey tones visible.

Old Merrit always said the Harrowgate Travelling Circus died the winter the big top sagged under snow and nobody had the money to patch it. What was left wintered in a farm barn outside Settle, and the only performer still working was a juggler named Dilys Foote, who had no partner and no audience but the cows. She practised with three grey feathers because the balls had gone to pawn. They were from a bird that had flown into the marquee wire the summer before, and she kept them tucked in her coat like letters.

One February morning the ringmaster came out to the barn with a telegram that he could not read aloud, so he handed it to her. It said the council had bought the field for housing. Dilys folded it small and went to the tent poles, which were stacked like bones against the wall. She tied the feathers to the tallest one with red thread, the way her mother used to mark a grave. Then she threw the fourth ball she had never managed, and it went up and up past the rafters where the light came through the broken slates, and for once it did not come down at all.
People in Settle still say that on clear mornings you can see a single feather drifting over the old field, turning slowly in the wind. Merrit tells them it is only a bit of the big top that never quite came down. I think he is wrong. I think it is Dilys, still keeping the last thing in the air where nobody can take it.
