Mixed · Flash

The sheet shows two feathers, one filled with blue, pink and purple tones on the left and one solid black on the right, each shedding a flock of small bird silhouettes. A smaller coloured feather and a few birds sit at the bottom edge. The linework is soft and the feathers use smooth shading, set against a plain white background with the printed text ART TATTOO STICKER and RC-239.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobi found the two feathers on the landing of Halden Tower the morning the lift stopped for good. One was black as a coal sack and as long as his forearm. The other was striped with blue and pink and a purple that shone like oil on a puddle after rain. He carried them up eleven flights in his fist, because his gran said you never left a feather lying where the wind could take it.

Gran Ivy took one look and sat down on the arm of the settee. 'Those belong to the flock,' she said. 'Each feather keeps a bird count. Hold them too long and the birds start following you home.'

By the next week there were birds on the balcony rail, dozens of them, small as thumbprints, turning together as if one mind moved them all. They gathered at the kitchen window every evening and waited, and the black feather began to tremble in Tobi's hand like something dreaming.

On the Sunday he opened the window wide and held the black feather out over the car park. The birds lifted off the rail in one long ribbon and poured up past the roof, bending over the flats and the grey river of the bypass, until the sky was full of them. The coloured feather stayed warm in his pocket. 'The black one goes home,' Gran said. 'The bright one is yours. Somebody has to remember which way the sky went.'

Forty years later he still keeps that window open. The lift still does not work, the coloured feather has gone soft from handling, and when the first flock comes round the corner of the block at dusk he puts the kettle on and waits for them to settle on the rail.
