Realistic pencil feather sketch

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A single feather is drawn in pencil, with a long quill curving from the upper right to the lower left. The barbs are rendered with fine, feathered strokes and soft shading that builds depth along one side of the shaft. The feather sits centred on a plain white background with no body part or other objects visible.

Ada Pryce had counted the cages down the shaft for nineteen years, and when the wheel above Llanwen Colliery stopped turning she was already halfway up the lane with her apron still on. The sky hung low over the slag heaps, the colour of wet slate, and the men by the pithead gates did not look at her; they looked at the ground.

Her daughter Nell came running after her, eleven years old and breathless, holding something behind her back. It was a feather, a long grey-brown one with a quill as pale as bone and barbs that shivered when she moved. She had found it on the tramway sleepers where the coal dust lay thickest. "It's from a bird that flew down the shaft," Nell said. "Dai says the canaries used to go first when the air turned bad. Maybe this one came up to tell us."

Ada took it without answering. She remembered the canary her husband had kept in a wire cage on the dresser, singing over the kettle each morning until the winter Tom went underground for the last time and the cage fell silent. She had hated that bird for a year afterwards. Now she turned the feather in the grey light and saw how the barbs fanned out in soft, overlapping strokes, each one darker near the shaft.

She carried it to the pit gates and held it up towards the headframe. The wind caught the barbs and turned the whole feather until its quill pointed straight down the shaft. Nobody moved. Then, far below, the brake gave a groan, the wheel shuddered and began to turn again.
