Feather dissolving into flying birds on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded feather runs diagonally across the side of the torso, with its tip fading into a trail of small solid black bird silhouettes that rise toward the upper body. The feather uses fine hatched linework and soft grey shading to show its texture, while the birds are flat black shapes with no interior detail. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph of the skin, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a plain background.

Sit down, sit down, the last tram has gone and the rain is only thinking about stopping, so you've time for this one. My great-aunt's husband kept a bakery on Carrow Lane, and every night when the ovens cooled he climbed to the flat roof with a paper bag of crusts. The street said he was feeding pigeons. He was not. He was feeding the gulls that came up the river when the fog sat low over the rooftops, and he was learning their names one at a time.

Then one February a feather came down out of that fog and landed on his floury wrist. Long, grey, shaded like smoke over a canal, its barbs combed into the shape of the river itself. Nobody had ever left him a gift like that, so he took it as a message. He tucked it behind his ear and went up to the roof again the next night, and a second feather came, then a third, until his coat pocket was full and the sky above the chimneys was thick with wings he could not count.
The city began to talk. A constable stopped him on the bridge and asked what he thought he was doing up there. He said he was waiting for his birds to come home. The constable laughed, then looked up and saw only the orange haze and a few dark shapes turning over the cathedral spire, and he did not laugh again.
When the bakery sold that winter, he gave his last feather to the girl who swept the steps and told her to keep it somewhere dry. He walked out past the gates without a bag or a coat. That night the fog came up the river slow and thick, and the girl stood at the top of the steps and watched something in it lift, a dark ribbon of wings, rising and breaking apart until nothing was left but the sound of them calling his name all the way to the sea.
