Black and grey realistic feather tattoo with small flying birds on a woman's upper back near the shoulder blade.

Feather and birds on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded feather curves diagonally down the upper back, with its quill and barbs drawn in fine grey linework and soft tonal shading. Four small dark birds in flight trail off towards the shoulder, balancing the composition. The image is in black and grey ink against plain pale skin, with the subject's head and hair out of focus at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the col just as the wind turns, and the first thing it takes is your hat. You let it go. Below you the valley is still in shadow, but the snowfield above catches the last light and throws it back so hard you have to squint. Your guide, Tomas, is already past the cairn, shouting something about the cornice. You don't hear the words. You are watching a grey feather come spinning up from the scree below, riding the updraught the way a leaf rides a stream, turning over and over until it lodges against the rock at your boot.

You pick it up. It is long and curved, the barbs still tight and silver-edged, the quill cold as a key. Tomas once told you that the pass takes a toll of something each season, and that the old shepherds left a feather at the cairn so the mountain would count the debt paid in birds instead of men. You had laughed at him over the stove that night. Now you tuck the feather into your collar and look up, and that is when you see them: five dark shapes stitching across the sky above the ridge, then four, then three, peeling away one by one towards the far side where the sun has not yet reached.

You count them until you lose count. Tomas comes back along the ridge with his face raw and his mouth open to scold you. He stops. He follows your gaze. For a long moment neither of you says anything, and the wind drops, and the snow stops hissing across the crust.

When you start down, the feather is still against your neck, light as a thought, and you do not look back at the cairn.
