Feather tattoo on the side of the body
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather runs diagonally across the skin, with its tip pointing down and to the right. The barbs are shaded in dark black and grey ink, with lighter gaps along the central quill that give it a three-dimensional look. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against soft, pale skin, with the edge of the body visible at the right.

He didn't. He held out a grey plastic bag and asked whether she bought anything that came off birds. She looked at the bag, then at the rain running in ropes off the stall's edge, and said she bought most things if they were any good.
Inside were feathers, a dozen or so, damp and flattened. He had found them along the canal towpath, he said, after a gull had been at something. He turned it so she could see the gap of pale shaft running down its spine like a seam of daylight.
She paid him four pounds and told him to come back when the weather broke. He never did, but she kept the feather in the tin with the good buttons, and on days when the market went quiet she would take it out and tilt it under the lamp, watching the dark vanes flicker to silver and back again.
