Feather inside an outlined heart on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an outlined heart tattoo on the inner forearm, with a shaded feather running down its left edge. The heart has a clean, even black outline, while the feather is built from fine, feathered strokes that create a soft, textured shading. The image is black and white, with a chain bracelet with an anchor charm visible at the top left and a plain background.

The chalk heart was already on the ninth-floor landing when Tomasz came up with his bucket, outlined in one careful unbroken line that someone had clearly redrawn twice. A grey feather lay across its left edge, pinned by a shard of concrete. He crouched and looked at it for longer than the job needed. The feather was real, a pigeon's most likely, and whoever had placed it had angled it so the light from the stairwell window caught the fine barbs and made them look soft.

He asked around the way caretakers do, through the letterboxes and the lift. Nell in flat 904 owned up to the chalk. She was seven and her gran had moved to Margate in the spring, and every Sunday they had walked up to this landing to wave at the sea, which you could see if you stood on the railing, which was not allowed. The feather, she said, had come from the pigeon that lived in the lift shaft and it was for gran, because gran liked pigeons, and the heart was so the feather would know where to go.
He meant to sweep it up on Monday. Instead he got down on his knees with a damp cloth and cleaned the grit from around the drawing without touching the line, then left the feather where it lay. Over the next fortnight the rain came in sideways through the broken vent and the heart blurred to a grey ghost, then faded into the concrete altogether. The feather stayed, pressed flat and dry under its stone. Every morning Tomasz stepped around it on his way to the bins.
