Sunset and palm leaves on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small fine line tattoo shows a sun setting behind horizontal water lines inside a circle, with palm fronds curving around the edges and three birds in the sky. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is entirely in black ink. The tattoo sits centred on the forearm against a plain light background, with a white sleeve at the left edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry to the island stopped running the autumn the sea went flat as slate, and Mairead Coll was left on the mainland with a cart, a striped tent, and forty pounds of borrowed pennies. She pitched the tent at the head of the harbour anyway. Nobody came to see a fair with no boats coming in, so she sat under the canvas with a box of tin whistles and waited for the weather to turn.

On the third evening a boy came up from the slipway carrying a fish in a bucket. He wanted to know if the fair could show him the sun going down over the water, because his grandmother had told him it sank into the sea like a coin into a well. Mairead said she had only the one trick, which was a brass disc painted with a sun, a row of blue lines for waves, and two palm fronds cut from a tin tray. She held it up against the last light and turned it slowly. The birds were three nicks scratched with a nail.

The boy looked a long while and then asked if the sun ever came back up on the other side. Mairead said it did, every morning, and that the trick was only ever the setting part. He counted the birds on his fingers, paid her a button, and went home with his fish. Next morning the ferry's horn sounded out past the breakwater, thin and certain, and the sea had lost its flatness in the night. She folded the tent, left the brass disc on the bollard for whoever came next, and never once looked back at the lines of water she had carried all that way.
