Feather tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is drawn in black ink across the lower forearm, angled from the wrist towards the outer side of the arm. The barbs and central shaft are rendered with fine, precise lines and soft grey shading. The photograph is taken in a dim car interior, with the hand clenched around a grey seat belt in the upper frame.

Her grandmother had kept geese on a holding outside Ludlow, and the quill had come from a white gander who hissed at everyone except the children. Nan used to say a feather brush gave an even gloss no synthetic bristle could match, and she had been right, which was the trouble with Nan. Marta had carried that quill through three kitchens and one bad winter, wrapped in a tea towel at the bottom of her bag.

Dev came in at ten to five with the tea he always forgot, and stood watching her paint the milk loaves in long, unhurried strokes. The landlord had sold the building. Their last bake would be the Friday. He did not say anything else, and neither did she, because the dough had to be egged before it skinned over.

When the trays were out and cooling on the rack, she tucked the feather into the gap between the tiles above the sink, quill first, where whoever came next might find it or might not. Outside, the first van pulled up, and the light came up grey and then gold across the flour sacks, and she let the back door swing open on the cold.
