Shaded rose on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose is tattooed on the outer upper arm, shown from a close angle with the bloom facing up and the stem curving down toward the elbow. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading, with darker tones in the centre and lighter edges, and a leaf sits to the left of the stem. The background is a pale sleeve on the left and a magenta and purple backdrop on the right.

Sit closer, the fire is low and the children need to hear this one properly. My grandmother's grandmother kept a rose alive in a glass jar on the windowsill of the last greenhouse at Tolmen Wharf, when the sea had already taken the lower streets and the gulls had learned to nest in the chimneys. Nobody believed a flower could survive the salt air, but she watered it from rainwater she caught in a tin bucket and talked to it every dusk, the way you would talk to a difficult uncle.

One winter the storm came in sideways and the glass cracked clean through. The bloom wilted, its outer petals gone the colour of old ash, and the whole street gathered to watch her cry over it. Then she did a strange thing. She took her knife and cut the stem at a slant, pressed it into wet clay beside the broken jar, and tied a strip of her own grey shawl around the wound. Her neighbours laughed. Who grows a rose from a stick in a storm?
In spring there were three new leaves on the stem, and by summer the bloom had opened again, heavy and dark at its heart, lighter and softer at its edges, as though it had been shaded by someone patient. That rose outlived her, and her children, and most of the wharf. When they finally carried it inland on a cart, the old men said it looked like the sea had tried to draw it and given up halfway. Now go to sleep. The rose is still there, and it still remembers the storm.
