Black and grey traditional swallow with script lettering and a feathered headdress portrait on a person's upper arm.

Swallow and headdress portrait on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey swallow with wings spread sits beside script lettering on the forearm, and a shaded portrait of a figure in a feathered headdress sits on the upper arm. The linework is bold with grey shading across the feathers and face, and the tattoos are set against bare skin and a dark t-shirt. The photo is taken close up, with the person's hands raised in front of their face so the face is not visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallow had been flying the wrong way for three hundred miles when Dell Yates finally pulled the rig onto the gravel shoulder outside Tolan Wells. Dust was still settling on the windscreen. In the mirror, the highway ran back toward the coast like a pulled thread, and somewhere along it was the diner where she had left her brother's coat and a promise.

The diner stood alone where the road bent around a salt flat, its sign a painted chief in a feathered crown, his face worn grey by sun and sand. Inside, a waitress called Marisol poured coffee without asking and said the swallows nested under the tin eaves every spring, then flew south the moment the first cold came down off the ridge. "They don't come back to the same place," she said. "They come back to the same road."

Dell had heard that before, from her father, who had a swallow inked on his forearm and a list of towns he swore he'd return to. He never returned to any of them. She thought of the lettering that ran beside the bird on his arm, which she had once read as a name and later as a direction, and wondered which she had been carrying all along.

She left the coat where it hung, took the keys from the hook, and drove back the way she had come, the painted sign shrinking in the mirror until the face was only a smudge of feathers against the sky.
