Feather tattoo on a lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with a long fishtail braid is photographed from behind, with bare back and shoulders. A small feather tattoo sits on the lower back, rendered in black ink with soft grey shading along its quill and barbs. The plain pale background keeps focus on the tattoo and braid, and a strappy rope-style top crosses the back beside it.

Morag had the net half mended when the grey bird came down on the shingle with one wing folded wrong. It had been circling the skerry all week, waiting for the boats to come home empty, and she knew it the way you know a neighbour's dog. She set her needle down and carried the bird up the path in her apron.

Her mother would have said to leave it to the gulls. Instead Morag drew one long flight feather from the wing, slowly, the way you ease a thread out of a tangled hank, and laid the rest of the bird in the peat by the door. The feather was pale at the root and dark toward the tip, and when she held it against the window the light ran down its barbs like rain down glass.

That winter she wore it pinned at the nape of her neck. The fishermen's wives said it was bad luck to carry a dead thing, and Morag agreed that it was, but told them the bird had lent it to her and would want it back in the spring. She sat at the loom and wove the same grey thread into the blue wool, one row at a time, and the net grew tighter and stranger under her hands.

In April the boats came in heavy with herring, every hull low in the water. The skipper's son gutted the first catch on the slipway while Morag watched from the wall with the feather still at her neck. When the gulls came down to squabble over the offal, one of them landed on the stones beside her and looked at the feather for a long time before it rose off over the water, and Morag understood that the debt was settled.
