Brother Anselm has left the cellar door open again, and the damp is coming up the stone steps to meet you before you reach the bottom. You count the casks by touch in the dark, the way he taught you, and find the one with the cracked hoop. Tonight is the feast of the abbey's founder, and the prior has forbidden wine in the refectory until the bell rings for vespers. Anselm says the prior has forgotten what a feast is for.

Outside, the rose garden is dropping its last petals onto the gravel. You carry the jug up through the cloister with your sleeve pulled over your hand, because the glass is cold and the wind off the moor finds every gap in your habit. Somewhere a novice is chanting badly, a half-beat behind the others, and you almost laugh. In the kitchen Brother Osric is already scraping the lid off the honey pot, grumbling that the bees have had a hard summer and so have the monks.
When the bell goes, you pour the first measure into the chipped beaker that belonged to the old abbot and set it by the prior's plate. He looks at it for a long moment. Then he looks at the window, where the light falls slantwise across the table in a bright blade, and he reaches for the cup himself.
