Mickey Mouse and Disney logo behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's head, with hair pulled into two buns and braids dyed teal and green. A small black tattoo sits behind the ear, showing Mickey Mouse ears above a stylised Disney D logo. The ink is solid black with simple outlines and no shading, and the plain grey background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

She filed it down anyway, slowly, the way her father had taught her, until the two round ears sat level over the looping D. Then she inked the face and pressed it onto a spoiled sheet. The impression came up crisp: two circles, one long curl, the kind of mark that made a six-year-old in Harrogate sit up at the breakfast table. Pellow came in with his tea, looked at it, and said nothing for so long that she began to pack away the tools.

'Send it,' he said at last. 'But cut yourself a second one for the drawer.' That night she wrapped the old seal in tissue, and the new one went out in a crate marked for the picture houses. Months later a postcard arrived addressed to the engraver, with a child's crayon drawing of the same two ears pressed in one corner and a line beneath in careful capitals: IT IS THE RIGHT ONE.
