Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped shot from the shoulders down shows a person in a grey crop top, black briefs and layered necklaces, standing in a room with shelves and plants. A large dark feather or leaf-like design with fine linework runs down the outer thigh, and smaller tattoos are visible on the upper arm and near the hip. The image is in black and grey tones with warm skin tones and no colour ink.

Marta had crossed the Col de Sorrel nineteen times before the snow came early, and on the twentieth she carried a satchel of letters instead of salt. The post-mule had gone lame at the hut below the pass, so the postmistress from Vallon had handed her the leather bag and a warning about the wind. Halfway up, a gust took her hat and she let it go, watching it bowl down the scree toward the grey lake until it was a speck she could no longer name.

At the cairn she stopped to breathe, and a raven dropped onto the stones beside her, close enough that she could see the dust on its shoulders. It set something down at her boots: a long dark flight feather, barred fine as a comb, its edge frayed where the wind had worked it. She knew the bird. Her brother Anselm had fed it crusts on the steps of their father's house before he took a cart of cheese over this same road in the autumn of the great storm, and nobody had seen him come down the far side.
She tucked the feather inside the top letter and pressed on through the thinning air. At the descent a woman in a doorway took the satchel without a word, read the outer envelope, and then unfolded the feather on her table between them. "He always said the birds would carry the post if the road failed," she said. Marta sat down, because her legs had decided it for her.
The woman poured two cups of thin red wine and slid one across. Outside, the raven lifted off the cairn and turned once over the valley before it vanished into cloud, and Marta understood that the letter she had carried for twenty years was finally being answered.
