Silver ornamental designs on forearms and hands

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a woman's torso, crossed forearms and hands, showing pale silver-white ornamental designs with paisley-like motifs and a dotted line running down the arms. The designs appear to be metallic temporary body art rather than ink, and they are drawn in fine, even lines with small dotted accents. The palette is limited to silver and white against tanned skin, with a blue crochet bikini and a metallic fringe pendant in the background.

It started as a teardrop, the shape the aunties wore on their wedding saris back home, and then it grew a curl at the tail the way a fern does when it has been left in a dark cupboard. I did not plan the pattern. I followed it. Alongside it went a line of small dots, one for every hour the night had left, and when I reached the last dot the sluice clock said twenty to six and the pen was nearly dry.

Mrs Abernethy in bay four had been awake since the nurse before me. She had watched me come in with the wipes and the silver pen and said nothing, which at her age is a kind of applause. When I went to check her line she caught my wrist and turned it to the lamp.

"My Walter did that on the back of a fag packet," she said. "Teardrops with tails. Said they were boats going somewhere he wasn't allowed."

"Where were they going?"

"Home, love. Where else do boats go?"

The day shift came in at seven and the alcohol gel took the silver off in one long grey smear. I thought I would mind. Instead I copied the dots onto the back of the drug chart in biro, sixty-three small marks, and passed it to Chidi at handover like a secret he was not to read until his own night began.
