Feather tattoo on the side ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare torso in side profile, with one arm and hand held across the chest against a dark background. A realistic feather is tattooed diagonally along the side of the ribs, with fine hatched linework and soft shading along the barbs and quill. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey and is the clear focal point of the composition.

At the river crossing between the two valleys, the toll-keeper Hanne Marsh kept a dish of goose quills on her sill, because every traveller had to sign the book before the bridge would take their weight. Most gave their names plainly. One autumn a man came up the road with no name to offer, only a feather pinched between two fingers.

It was a long grey flight feather, its barbs as fine as hatching on a copper plate, its quill dark and straight as a ruler. Hanne asked where he had got it. He said a crow had dropped it on the water at dawn, and the crow had been carrying a letter that nobody on this side would ever read. He wanted to cross and deliver it. The bridge, she told him, had never let anyone over without a name.
So he sat at her table and wrote. He did not write any words. He drew the feather in the margin of the book, every barb and every shadow beneath it, then tore the page carefully along the binding and folded it into his coat. Hanne watched him climb the far slope in the rain, and she thought him either a fool or a thief of paper.
Each spring after, she found one fresh feather lying on the sill beside the quills, dry and grey, never once wet by the weather. She stopped writing the names of the dead in her book. She wrote the names of the living instead, and left a quill beside each one, for the feather that always came.
