Black and grey eagle on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A soaring eagle with wings spread wide and its head turned to the right, rendered in soft shading and sharp dark feather strokes. The tattoo fades into lighter grey smoke-like tones along the lower body and wing edges. It sits on the side of the ribcage and is photographed in close, black and white framing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dust had settled on everything by the time the eagle came over the ridge, so at first I took it for a torn tarpaulin catching the wind. Wes pulled the old lorry onto the verge and cut the engine. Forty miles of nothing lay ahead, and the jerrycan in the back sloshed like a guilty conscience.

It hung above the road with its head turned towards us, wings spread so wide the outer feathers seemed to smoulder at their tips. Each dark stroke of the flight feathers stood sharp against the sky, and lower down the wing thinned into a grey smoke that the heat haze swallowed whole. Wes said it was after the hares in the scrub. I said nothing, because I could not take my eyes off its eye, which held us the way a customs man holds a passport.

His grandfather had driven this road in the fifties, Wes told me, and always kept a single feather tucked behind the sun visor for luck. Nobody believed the stories about the bird following the lorries out past the last well. I had believed none of them either, until the eagle folded its wings, dropped like a stone into the saltbush and rose again empty-clawed, which seemed to annoy it.

When the wheel was changed, I found a dark primary feather caught in the wheel nut, long as my forearm and still warm from the sun. I pinned it behind the visor where his had been, and we drove on with the road shaking under us and a wing-shaped shadow sliding ahead of the bonnet all the way to the coast.
