Realistic bird with spread wings on a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large bird with outstretched wings and a hooked beak fills most of the upper back, with its head near the right shoulder blade and a clawed foot visible lower down. The feathers are rendered with detailed, layered shading that gives the wings depth and a sense of movement. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey ink against smooth, evenly lit skin with a dark background.

The gulls have given up on the fish market by the time you reach the bottom of Quay Steps, so the bird on the bollard is the only thing still watching the boats come in. It is larger than any raven you have seen on this coast, and it does not flinch when Marjorie Penhale from the chandlery shouts at you to shift your van. Its wings are half open, as though it has only just landed and forgotten to fold them.

Your grandfather said the ravens of Porthkerris were the harbour's bookkeepers. They kept count of every net that went out and every man who did not come back, and they took a single feather from each boat that sank. You laughed at him then. Now you watch the bird lift its hooked beak toward the Mary Lune, the trawler with the blue hull that went out at four and has not radioed since, and you find you are counting feathers on its left wing without meaning to.
Seven, eight. The tide turns. Nobody else on the quay looks up.
At dusk you walk the breakwater with the bird keeping pace on the rail above you. At the end, where the lighthouse hums, it drops one long black primary onto the stones at your feet and lifts away over the water, towards the lights of the Mary Lune coming round the point, her engine low and steady, her decks full.
