Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather is outlined in bold black linework, with its central shaft running diagonally from top to bottom. The heron had been following us since Stoke, stepping along the towpath as though it had paid for a ticket. My uncle Ray said it was after the coal. Every morning he scraped the ice off the tiller while I told him herons eat eels, not coal, and every morning he said that was exactly what a coal-fed bird would tell you.

On the third day it lifted off the bank at the Shardlow lock and came down on our cabin roof, legs folded like a carpenter's rule. It stayed there while the lock gates groaned and the water rose around us. Ray didn't move, and neither did I. Then the wind caught a single grey feather and turned it over and over, showing every curl of its vanes in the low sun, before it dropped onto the cut and started drifting after us.
I fished it out with the boathook. The shaft was pale and the edges were patterned with little spirals, the same whorls Ray had cut into the tiller handle the year Aunt Jean left us. He had never told me why. He took the feather from my hand, looked at it a long while, and then tucked it under the brass hook where the mooring line lived. "Leave it there," he said. "Some things only mean to pass through."
We worked the Trent for another fortnight. The heron never came back. But at every lock after that, when the gates opened and the water pulled us forward, the feather was already on the surface ahead of us, turning slowly in the current, and Ray would steer after it without a word.
