Hummingbird with flowing feathers on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A hummingbird in mid-flight sits at the top of the design, its long beak pointing left, with wings drawn in outline and shaded lilac. Its tail becomes a sweeping series of curling feathers that trail down the back in an S-shape, with black linework and purple shading on the plumes. The image is a close photograph of the upper back against a plain background, with a dark garment and pink fabric visible at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the hummingbird first in the lemon tree behind the customs shed on Little Coral Cay, the morning the supply boat fails to come. It hangs in the air with its long beak pointed at the cistern, wings blurring to nothing, and its tail unspools behind it in curls the colour of bruised plums.

Old Mrs Haddad, who keeps the only shop, says the bird belongs to nobody, that it travels the reefs carrying whatever the fishermen forget to say. She sends you after it with a tin of sugar cake and a question for her sister on Marrow Key, who has not answered a letter since the storm. You follow the feathers down the cliff path, each one a little longer than the last, until they lead you to the water's edge.

The tail doesn't end at the sea. It carries on beneath the surface, a ribbon of shadow curving out across the shallows toward the far island. You wade out to your knees. The hummingbird hovers once above the swell, drops a single lilac plume onto the water, and the plume drifts to you like an answer arriving before the question is asked.

Marrow Key is a day's paddle, and you make it. Her sister's door is painted the same blue as the bird's wings. When you hand over the cake and the question, she laughs, then cries, and takes from her apron a feather identical to the one you carry, curled at the root. You leave with the tin empty and the reply folded in your pocket, and the hummingbird is already gone, its S-shaped trail still hanging over the lagoon like a line someone forgot to reel in.
