The snow closed the pass on Tuesday, so the carrier left your letter at the inn at Col de Vaurs instead of bringing it up to me. I walked down for it through the drifts with Mother's stick. You say the sea at Sète is grey as slate and the gulls are fat with bread. I don't believe a word of it, but I read it three times anyway, sitting on the upturned barrel by the stove while Madame Roux pretended not to watch.

I have been mending the ledger with the old goose quill you left behind. It is too stiff for copying figures properly, but it draws a thin line that the damp doesn't blur, and I find I like the scratch of it. Yesterday I found a feather caught in the gate hinge, long and dark with a pale edge, the kind a buzzard drops when it has been fighting the wind up the gully. I kept it in my pocket all the way home. It sits on the sill now beside the inkpot, and when the light comes through the window the barbs go silver at their edges.

Father says the buzzards will be gone by April and the mules can use the pass again. Before they leave I mean to climb to the cairn and see whether the one with the torn wing is still circling over the scree. If I see him, I will write to you from the top, though the ink may freeze before I reach the second line.
