Dandelion seeds tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a small black dandelion tattoo on her upper back near the shoulder blade. The dandelion head is drawn in fine, dark linework with shaded detail, and several seeds appear to drift away from it towards the shoulder. The image is in full colour, but the tattoo is in black ink on warm skin, with the dark dress and cream bag in the background.

The van's temperature gauge has been climbing since Dorrin's Well, and you have stopped pretending the radio works. Out past the last fence the road runs flat and pale for thirty miles, and the heat makes the far hills shiver like something underwater. You pull onto the verge because a thin wind has got into the cab, and it smells of cut grass, which makes no sense out here.

A dandelion clock stands alone in a crack of grey gravel, lit from behind, its seeds already loosening. Your father used to make you blow them at bus stops and say the number of breaths was the number of years until someone wrote back. You stopped counting a long time ago. You crouch beside it, and the heat leans on the roof of the van, and you think about the letter in the glovebox, unopened since Tuesday, addressed in his handwriting.
You lean in and breathe out, not quite a wish. The seeds lift all at once, a wobbling constellation, and the wind carries them west over the scrub towards the hills, each one catching a little light before it goes. Three seeds refuse to leave and stick to the cuff of your sleeve. You pick one off. It is nothing, a weightless hair with a tiny parachute, and you realise you have been holding your breath.
Back in the van you open the glovebox. The envelope is still sealed. You slide your thumb under the flap slowly, the way you would lift a seed from a palm, and read the first line before the window can let the wind in again.
