The gulls have got into the bins again, and Mrs Pardoe has taken to shouting at them from her step at six every morning, which is the only news I have that will make you laugh. Your boat came in on Tuesday but you were not on her. I asked Gil at the chandlery and he said you had signed off at Falmouth, which is the first I have heard of it, so I am writing this on the back of the tide tables and hoping it finds you somewhere with a post office.

I found the two feathers pinned under the dresser, where you always left things you meant to come back for. The grey-white one is from a gull, the one that sat on our wall the summer you broke your wrist. The blue one is from the jay in Hollis wood. You will remember I always said it was a blue that didn't belong in England. I have kept them both in your old tin with the quill you used for the ledger, the one with the chewed end.

I have dipped that quill every evening this week and not written anything with it. Tonight I made a small heart at the tip of the blue feather with the last of the red ink, because you once said that was how a letter ought to end, and then I sat looking at it until the lamp guttered.

Come home when the pilchards are back, or write and tell me where you have gone. Either will do. The tin is on the sill and the door is on the latch.
