Feather with birds on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is tattooed on the side of the ankle, with a trail of tiny birds flying away from its upper edge. The feather is drawn with fine lines and soft grey shading that suggests its barbs, and the birds are simple dark marks. The ink is entirely black and grey against lightly tanned skin, with a pale bed sheet filling the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gull that came down on the Marguerite's bow had a feather missing from its left wing, and Tomas Verlaine decided that was a sign, because everything on the Hull Lass that week had been a sign of something. The engine had seized off Flamborough. The cook had sworn at the radio until it coughed out a shipping forecast nobody believed. So when the bird lifted off the rail and shed a single grey quill onto the wet deck, Tomas picked it up and tucked it inside his oilskin like a man pocketing a coin for luck.

He gave it to his sister Ines at the harbour wall in Grimsby three days later, when the boat was finally in and she was waiting with her hands in her coat pockets. She turned it over and asked what she was supposed to do with a feather. Tomas said nothing. He had meant to tell her about the birds, how the flock had risen from the water behind the gull like a handful of thrown ash and scattered north over the cliffs, but the words had gone wherever words go at sea.

Ines took the feather home. For a month it sat in a jam jar on her windowsill, and every morning she moved it to catch the light. Then one afternoon she rang the shop on Freeman Street and asked for the man who did the small work, and she described exactly what she wanted: one feather, a little worn at the tip, and the birds leaving it.

Tomas heard about it only later, from a text with a photograph. In the picture the feather lay on his sister's ankle, grey as the sea off Flamborough, and the birds were already flying away from it, out past the edge of the skin.
