Feather and beaded anklet tattoo on an ankle

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo on the ankle shows a beaded chain with an ornate oval pendant that flows down into a shaded feather. The feather has soft grey gradients and fine barb detail, while the beads are rendered with highlights to look three-dimensional. The design runs diagonally across the foot against a plain light background.

You find the beaded chain wedged between the seat and the wall of the 16:42 to Carlisle, a fine cord with an oval pendant no bigger than a thumbnail and a grey feather hanging from it by a single bead. Lost property at Preston is a shelf of umbrellas and odd gloves, so you hang it on the hook by the window, where the light is good, and tell yourself someone will come back for it.

Nobody comes in the first week. The feather is so fine that it stirs whenever the heating clicks on, and each time a train pulls out the pendant catches the platform lights, a small bright oval that goes dark and then bright again. You start to know its rhythm better than your own. Mrs Okafor from the cleaning crew says it looks like something a girl would wear to a summer wedding, and you say nothing, because you have already decided its owner walks fast and never looks down.

On the fourteenth day a man in a wet raincoat asks for the thing with the feather and can describe nothing else. You ask which train. He says the last one, always the last one. You hand it over, and he turns the pendant in his palm, finds a tiny scratched initial on the back, and laughs at himself for not knowing it was there.

He closes his fist around the chain, walks out past the ticket barrier into the rain, and you notice that the window ledge where it hung still holds a faint glimmer, the way a platform stays lit long after the last train has gone.
