Small feather tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the outer ankle, curving diagonally from upper left to lower right. The feather has a thin central shaft and fine, detailed barbs drawn in black and grey shading. The foot rests on a green surface, and the tattoo is the only point of visual focus in the composition.

The gannet struck the lantern glass a little after two, the way they did when fog sat low and the lamp turned too bright for their eyes. Ruth Penrose found it in the gallery at first light, one wing folded wrong, the rest of it still warm. She carried it down the iron stairs cupped in her apron, because her father would only grumble and then want to see it for himself.

Walter Penrose had kept the Skerry Light for thirty-one years and had never once kept a bird. He turned the thing over in his big hands and said the wing would not mend. The feather was another matter. He drew one long primary from the tip, slowly, as if asking permission, and held it against the grey window.
Its shaft was thin as a hair, and the barbs ran either side in fine dark lines, some sharp, some frayed where the wind had worked them. The whole thing curved away from the quill like a wave lifting off a rock. "Nothing on the mainland makes a thing that fine," he said, and for once he did not say anything else.
That evening Ruth dipped the feather in the ink pot and wrote the log by lamplight, the way the keepers had before the Board sent up the steel pens. The hand came out thin and uneven, but it was hers. Under the date she wrote: Gannet struck glass at 0214. Wing broken. Kept the quill.
